Semplificando un pò, è possibile seguire anzitutto tre linee tematiche.
La prima riguarda ovviamente l'ambientazione, cioè il cosiddetto sapore dell'epoca che in questo caso sono gli anni Quaranta di una New York, dietro ci vedi un elegante anche se un pò provinciale salotto del primo '900.
Il secondo motivo, a cui si è accennato, riguarda la letteratura. Così raccontando della sua curiosità la Gilbert, descrive il mondo dello spettacolo degli anni Quaranta. Ed è proprio lo spettacolo il primo terreno sul quale recita la protagonista Vivia. L'atto creativo, la passione, il motivo amoroso la terza linea tematica. Elizabeth Gilbert racconta la storia di donne molto diverse tra loro ma accomunate dall'essere <<intrappolate tra due situazioni: essere veramente sè stesse e trovare l'amore.>> Vivian è allontanata, a cui manca proprio un'identità familiare che è parte di lei, sperando così di essere accettata da chi le sta attorno. Detta così sembra una fiaba, in realtà mostra la straordinaria capacità di essere attuale come riflessione sulle diversità e dell'accettazione di sè e come metafora dell'identità anche sessuale.
